Description

So, there's this meme going around where people draw their cartoon characters in CalArts style. It's a style used in just about every modern cartoon show on TV, mostly on Cartoon Network. I find it pretty annoying. In my honest opinion, I think it's rather overrated and overused. Nevertheless, I thought I'd take a chance and draw my characters in CalArts style, just for the curiosity of it. This is not me praising it. I'm just doing this for the curiosity of it.

UPDATE: I decided to rename my titles from "CalArts" to "BEAN".

Here is one I'm mostly proud of: Penny Doodle and Pink-A-Boo! Penny Doodle seems to be the most CalArts-looking one, with her simplified features and round edges and shapes. Her messy pointy hair has been simplified to rounded edges. She has the traditional bean smile. And she has noodle arms and legs. Also, the zig-zag-y stripes on her white top have been simplified to just plain stripes.

Pink-A-Boo doesn't have that many different features, except, of course, her simplified shapes. Also, the bean mouth.

Are you calling this style “Bean” because of the shapes? I don’t like it either. It works fine for Gravity Falls, Gumball, and Steven Universe. But it’s a bit too much to have it for every. single. other. cartoon coming out. Way overused. I do not understand why hardly any animation studio does not continue to use the classic cartoon style that has dominated most cartoons from the 40s to early 90s. Seriously, looks at 40s Loony Toons and Tom and Jerry and the classic cartoon eyes and general style is similar to a lot of cartoons of the 80s and early 90s still. There were individual variations from creator to creator, writer to writer, and studio to studio, sure. But they all used the basis of the classic cartoon look. Drastic individual new styles is fine for specific features that was to break the mold and be different. I don’t have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is some of these new drastic changes completely changing all of mainstream.
